Belgrade was founded in 259 BC and achieved city status in 150 AD. The city has been under Slavic and Turkish rule during its long and varied history, lying as it does in one of the less happy parts of Europe. Tourists have a wide variety of sites to see, from museums and historic monuments and buildings to the famous café life. 1.7 million people live here, with a total of 2.5 million in the Greater Belgrade district. There is an active LGBT scene which has grown from both a political and cultural/social view point.
