Ankara was before 1930 called Engürü, before that Angora and in the classical period, Ancyra. Apart from being the capital of Turkey and therefore the country’s political and legal centre, Ankara is also a strong commercial centre.
Gay life here is not as flourishing as in Istanbul, but there is a choice of gay bars and gay friendly Hamans (Turkish baths) also in the capital.
