Detroit, thelargest city in Michigan State, is known for being the centre of car manufacturing in the USA. Hence, the Pride celebrations here have been named Motor City Pride.
Around 5.5 million people live in the greater Detroit area. If you add neighbouring Canadian city Windsor, the area has close to 6 million inhabitants.
The name Detroit comes from the river the French called le détroit du Lac Erie. Towards the end of the 18th century heavy battles where fought between Indians, led by Chief Pontiac from the Ottawa tribe, and French military.
Between 1805 and 1847 Detroit was the capital of Michigan, but was then replaced by the considerably smaller city of Lansing.
