Utrecht is the religious centre of the Netherlands and where the catholic arch bishop has his seat, as does the Protestant and old catholic churches. This is also the location for the foremost university in the Netherlands, where LGBT research has been undertaken since the eighties.
The area has been inhabited since the bronze age, 1800 to 800 B.C. A Roman fortification was built here in year 47 A.D.
