Basel is, after Zürich and Geneva, the third largest city in Switzerland, bordering Germany and France. River Rhine runs right through it. Basel is a cultural city with big and important museums and collections, such as Kunstmuseum, Fonadtion Beyerle and Antikenmuseum. But culture isn’t everything. In addition, the city offers a lot in terms of entertainment. The best way to explore the city is by walking and discover the cathedral (Basler Münster), Rathaus and the many lovely squares. Basel also has the oldest hotel in Europe, ”Hotel Les Trois Rois”, mentioned already in 1681, and visited by great personalities such as Napoléon Bonaparte, Johann Wolfgang Goehte, Voltaire, Pablo Picasso, Chagall, The Rolling Stones and Giacomo Casanova. Basel, with its central location in Europe, is an excellent starting point for travelling around Europe by train and plane, or for a visit in the Alps, as well as the cities of Colmar and Mulhouse in France, and Vogesen and Schwarzwald in Germany.
