Peru is situated in western South America by the Pacific Ocean and borders Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia och Ecuador. Once, it was the centre for the powerful Inca Empire. The area has suffered many wars, military dictatorships and different poeer shifts. Democratic elections were not helt until 2001. The climate varies from a dry desert climate in the west, to tropical in the east. In the Andes mountains the climate varies from temperate to cold. The country suffers earthquakes, tsunamis and floods. Over half of the population is native Indian. The gay scene is primarily found in the capital, Lima.
