Dr. Erica Anderson will discuss the history and current issues with healthcare services to transgender persons. Until recent years the number of transgender persons were believed to be small. Those who presented to doctors and health systems for formal care often were subjected to significant evaluation under a model of care called the gatekeeper model. In the USA this meant that many transgender persons sought care only from a select number of programs and services including surgeries were often paid for privately since few US insurance companies paid for transgender treatment. More and more models of informed consent are challenging the patrimony/matrimony of medical professionals solely determining the standards by which trans persons receive care.
