Tirana replaced the city of Durrës as capital when Albania became independent in 1920. In the old parts of the city there are ancient buildings and architecture. The Skanderbeg square is located in the city centre. Here you also find the Etehem Bej Mosque, a church and the cultural palace. Other places worth a visit are the National Historic museum and the house of the Communist Party.
